Court Docs Detail Lengthy Investigation of Archbishop Teacher in Felony Sex Crime Case

EVERETT — The reason for an Archbishop Murphy science teacher’s recent absences became clear Monday, when felony charges were filed in King County.
As it turned out, John Richard Doty, 32, hadn’t made it to teach his science classes lately… because he’d been locked up in a King County jail… on a quarter million dollar sex crimes bond… since last Thursday.
Doty was arrested last Thursday morning following a search of his Juanita apartment – a search that was the culmination of a six-month investigation launched by specially-trained forensic detectives who monitor internet traffic and seek to disrupt the exploitation of children.
King County prosecutors followed up late Monday, filing two felony sex crimes against the 32-year-old educator, charging Doty with Dealing in Depictions of Minor Engaged in Sexually Explicit Conduct in the First Degree, and Possession of Depictions of Minor Engaged in Sexually Explicit Conduct in the First Degree.

Each crime is a Class B felony that carries a maximum penalty of ten years in prison and $20,000 in fines.
King County Prosecuting Attorney Leesa Manion asked for (and received) a quarter million dollar bail, citing the likelihood “that the defendant will commit a violent offense in light of the depraved nature of the depictions which he disseminated, exchanged …with like-minded individuals.”
Doty has no known criminal history but admitted to law enforcement that he knowingly collected pornography involving victims including infants, toddlers and elementary-age children.
