LAKE STEVENS — The Lake Stevens Vikings (7-5, 2-1) fought back from a 4-0 first inning deficit to beat the Glacier Peak Grizzlies (5-7, 1-2), taking Wesco’s opening-week series 2-1 after an 11-10 win in sunny Lake Stevens on Friday afternoon.
Junior slugger Julian Wilson continued his dominant season, going 3-for-4 with a double, three RBI and two runs scored; senior catcher and leadoff man Haydan Villasenor went 2-for-4 with a double, two RBI and a run scored; Trey Nance also doubled and added two RBI; and sophomore Seth Danielson went 1-for-4 with an RBI, scoring three times.
Senior Jared Hardie started and got the win for the Viks, surviving a tough first and carrying the ball deep into the game for Lake. Hardie struck out five in four and two-thirds innings pitched, but battled through control issues, walking seven.
Glacier Peak opened the scoring with four in the top half of the first; Lake got one on the board in the bottom half and then bats went silent until the bottom of the third: the Viks struck for five runs in each of the third and fourth innings, opening up a decisive seven run lead. GP hit back for four in the fifth and another two in the sixth before Lake steadied the ship and took the series.
Luke Morris pitched two-thirds of an inning as Glacier Peak fought back from an 11-4 deficit to make it a one run contest headed into the late innings.
Caleb Tilford emerged from the pen and threw water on the fire, pitching one and two-thirds shutout innings for the save. He allowed just one batter to reach.
The two teams played three times this week to open up Wesco play. After one week, Lake sits in second place, a half game behind the perfect Jackson Timberwolves (12-0, 3-0).
