State Volleyball: Lake Stevens Faces Gonzaga Prep in Semifinal, 10:30 am
Vikings dispatch Davis and Issaquah in straight sets, path to title includes Saturday matches with RPI #2 Gonzaga Prep at 10:30 am followed by possible finale with RPI #1 Curtis at 5:30 pm
YAKIMA - As the commentator from Eli Sports put it, second-seeded Lake Stevens is playing a “brand of volleyball we haven’t seen in Yakima in the last five or six years”, powering their way through to the semifinals on the strength of two straight-set victories over #15 seed Davis (25-17, 25-17, 25-18) and #10 seed Issaquah (25-19, 25-19, 25-10).
The fact that the 22-0 Vikings earned straight set wins is little surprise: the undefeated Viks have lost just one set the entire year: to league competitor Arlington.
How good have the Viks been?
They didn’t even yield a set playing at top seed and reigning champ Curtis, whom the Viks handled on the road September 29, ending Curtis’ 34-match winning streak in Curtis in straight sets.
Despite the fact that Lake Stevens is undefeated and won 3-0 at Curtis in September, the title-holding Curtis Viks (22-2) received the 4A tournament top seed.
Curtis beat Mount Si 3-0 before surrendering a set to Olympia before moving on to a semifinal matchup with #4 Wenatchee Saturday.
Lake Stevens faces #3 seed Gonzaga Prep (ranked second in RPI). Prep is 16-1, their sole loss coming to 8-9 Lewis and Clark.
The Bullpups surrendered a set to Mount Rainier in the morning match but got through Puyallup in straight sets Friday night, setting up the 10:30 am match with Lake Stevens.
Powered by reigning state tournament MVP and Gatorade Player of the Year Laura Eichert, riding an undefeated season marred by the loss of just one set, Lake is in its strongest position ever with respect to bringing home that elusive title - the winning of which is always coach Kyle Hoglund’s goal.
Should Eichert and the Viks get past Gonzaga Prep in the 10:30 am match (stream at NFHS), a title showdown with the winner of Curtis vs Wenatchee awaits. Facing Curtis would represent a rematch of last year’s thrilling 3-2 finale in which Curtis held off a fierce Lake charge.
Given that Lake rebounded into 2025 by ending the Curtis win streak (in Curtis) in straight set run-through, the storyline would be set with the title on the line.
