⚽️ LAKE TAKES WESCO TITLE — Viks to the Knights: “Crown Me!”
Lake Stevens earned a Wesco title with a 4-2 victory at Kamiak Monday. Frosh Noelani Tupua had a brace and senior captains Zoe Hopkins and Maya Courtney both scored in the emotional victory.
“I think they’re ready. I think they’re strong…they’re ready to make a little bit of a run.” - Viking HC Sam Ford.
MUKILTEO — (Breaking) Less than a year removed from a “tragic” season that claimed four ACLs, the Lake Stevens Vikings ripped off a 7-1 league campaign, torching Wesco competition by a combined score of 30-6 en route to the program’s first conference title in more than a decade.
Lake was led by youth and experience. Senior captains Zoe Hopkins and Maya Courtenay both scored — and freshman Noelani Tupua had two goals in the road win.
Monday’s league-topping win avenges Lake’s sole league loss — and opened up a gap in goal differential between the two 7-1 clubs.
At the very least, Lake claims a co-championship. But probably the whole thing.
As the scoreboard flickered to black and against the din of popping balloons, Coach Sam Ford reflected on how far the squad has come in a year.
“Last year was described as ‘tragic’. We had four ACLs in the first four games,” Ford said, adding that through the adversity the squad returned stronger and determined to make a mark.
“I think they’re ready. I think they’re ready to make a bit of a run.”
This is a developing story.
