Game Story: Vikings Maul Kennedy Catholic with Running-Clock Victory
Lake Stevens hosts the WIAA State Semifinal Sat. 1 pm vs Kamiakin after another dominant win. Recap, stats & pictures.
LAKE STEVENS — Exquisite. Lake Stevens was nearly perfect in the first half last Friday night in annihilating visiting Kennedy Catholic, the team Lake edged for the State Championship a season ago. The 44-0 halftime score was no fluke as Lake destroyed the Lancers equally on offense and on defense, outgaining KC 399-11 in yards and 13 first downs to zero during the first two quarters.
Lake took the opening kickoff and went 81 yards in five plays including Kolton Matson's 35-yard pass to Jesse Lewis, Matson's 23-yard strike to Jaxson Lewis, and Jayshon Limar's 18-yard scoring scoot around left end, virtually untouched. Lucas Mooring notched the PAT kick, and the rout was on.
Editor’s note: QB Kolton Matson is now two short of Jacob Eason’s season record of 43 passing TD set in 2015 over 13 games. Matson needs three passing TDs Saturday to pass Eason in the same amount of games.
Viking defense took over from there, stuffing KC's running and passing efforts, beginning with Mason Turner's sack of quarterback Devon Forehand. Turner, Gage Solomon and Jaxson Lewis were to share in eight sacks for the game.
Lake was briefly thwarted when its next drive, featuring Paul Varela's 42-yard sweep, ended with Mooring's 20-yard field goal try being blocked, KC recovering on the Lancer nine.
