Marysville SD one step from liquidation as state places district in receivership, an unprecedented action for district of MSD’s size
Lake Stevens could be on the hook if Marysville School District goes under — which, after yesterday’s nearly unprecedented state intervention — seems increasingly more likely.
The Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) notified Marysville School District (MSD) yesterday they’d be placed in receivership (state control) and subject to Enhanced Financial Oversight (EFO), a statutory term that basically equates to “the very last thing before we dissolve this whole mess into nothing and let some other district take over”.
State Superintendent of Public Instruction Chris Reykdal said yesterday he’d “lost confidence” that the district has the decision-making tools or current personnel necessary to fix its financial situation.
Reykdal raked Marysville over the coals, stating that the district has yet to produce a viable budget for ’24-’25 (this year) and referenced a State Auditor report that called district financial projections “unreliable” and concluded by stating that “serious financial concerns” exist at MSD.
